UCD began the defence of their Harding Cup Crown with an impressive 1-0 win over NUIG.
UCD started their defence of the Harding Cup with a strong performance against NUIG. UCD's Freshers came out on top in a closely match with a Cillian Morrison goal proving to be the difference.
UCD began the game brightly with several passing moves creating chances for the Dublin students to take the lead. One such move involved the impressive Niall Wright who picked up the ball in midfield before threading an inch perfect ball through the Galway defence. Cillian Morrison collected the ball, advanced on the keeper and nonchalantly chipped it over the stranded net minder.
UCD continued to dominate the game with Galway restricted to half chances from outside the box. The second half provided much of the same as Galway struggled to make an impact on UCD's defence.
At the other end of the field UCD always looked dangerous with Morrison and Sexton combining well on several occasions. Sexton missed a good chance on a rebound from a Morrison shot and later Morrisson found himself in a goalscoring position only for the Galway keeper to deny him with an impressive save.
UCD's defence conitinued to hold strong in the face of long balls from the Galway rearguard. On a rare foray forward Tristan Dent tested the keeper, turning smartly with the ball in the air before smashing it straight at hte keeper.
UCD held on to register a well deserved win. UL await the Belfield students in the next round following a 5-3 win over St Patrick's.
